Cobbler PXEboot SLES

How to Install the SLES (11) Operating System over the Network

It’s complicated, but it is possible to install SLES without the DVD in the drive. Cobbler is primarily designed for RHEL/CentOS, but it is a very handy tool for provisioning SLES systems as well.

This how-to begins after you have already configured your Cobbler environment and DHCP should be serving the MAC address for the system to be provisioned.

First, mount and rsync the install DVD/iso to a path on your hard drive, example: /sles/

Add the SLES distro. Specify SLES10 for os-version.

cobbler distro add --name=SLES11.2 --arch=x86_64 --breed=suse \
--initrd=/sles/sles11.2-x86_64/boot/x86_64/loader/initrd \
--kernel=/sles/sles11.2-x86_64/boot/x86_64/loader/linux \
--os-version=sles10 \

Make a symlink to share the SLES tree via httpd:

ln -s /sles/sles11.2-x86_64 /var/www/html/sles11.2
service httpd restart

Create a new location for your autoyast (=kickstart) file that is shared by httpd. For example, in the OS source dir:

mkdir autoyast; cp autoyast_server1.xml sles11.2-x86_64/autoyast/

Being a first new install of this OS, I needed a sample autoyast.xml file, so I found one on this page:

<?xml version="1.0"?>
<!DOCTYPE profile>
<profile xmlns="" xmlns:config="">
    <users config:type="list">
            <encrypted config:type="boolean">false</encrypted>

Add a profile:

cobbler profile add --name=slesprofile --distro=SLES11.2 \
--kickstart="" \
--kopts='textmode=1 !text !ksdevice !ksendmac !lang' \
--name-servers=192.168.X.X \

Add a system:

cobbler system add --name=server1 \
--profile=slesprofile \
--ip=192.168.X.X --mac=AB:CD:EF:GG:HH --subnet= --static=true \
